Young graduate first to represent Jamaica in art camp, Spain

Kimani Beckford, final-year student at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and one of the young artists responsible for the transformation of the corporate offices of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), created history by being the first Jamaican to represent the country at an art camp in Andorra, Spain.

The annual art camp which ran from July 17 to August 7 is fully sponsored by UNESCO International and has attracted more than 35 artists from across the world. Their works had to be submitted and approved by a panel of adjudicators prior to their selection.

Showcasing Jamaican talent

According to Grace Silvera, executive director of the JCDC, “This is one of the many opportunities the commission will be aggressively exploring to showcase Jamaican talents on the world stage. It’s in keeping with our new strategy of cultural development beyond the national medals and awards. We must export more talents.”

Secretary General of UNESCO Jamaica, Everton Hannam, who played an integral role in securing the unique opportunity for young Beckford, lauded the artist for his excellent work. He said: “Kimani made it easy for Jamaica to identify a representative based on his exceptional talent.”

Beckford is also responsible for the vibrant and artistic transformation of the JCDC’s newly renovated Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre and Louise Bennett Garden Theatre.
